A postpartum doula works with new families during this period, to help them to better enjoy the early days with their new baby. The postpartum doula provides non-medical support and helps to create a nurturing environment for the mother, partner, and baby. The role of the doula is not to assume primary responsibility for the newborn, but to assist the mother and her partner in their new role as parents so they can bond with and gain confidence in taking care of their baby.

“No, I didn’t use a postpartum doula but I wish I had both times. I always thought it was just about taking care of the newborn, but after the fact I learned it was about taking care of me too. As a first time mom, it’s hard to understand the recovery from labor and delivery especially when you don't have family close by. The second time around, I had family in and out helping to care for my older son, but I was still alone in recovery with a newborn. I wish I had been encouraged to get a PD. It’s the best gift anyone could give a new mama.”
